Meet your teacher, Jenny!

By OceanFirst on 9/20/16

Jenny has been teaching at the Ocean First Swim School since this summer, and her quick wit and patience with children makes her a valuable addition to the team. We asked her a few questions to get to know her better:
Where did your love of the water come from? 10612826_10154648087200707_5340793805097666307_n.jpg
I've been swimming since I was able to walk. My dad really helped foster my interest in scuba diving by helping me get scuba certified and taking me on several scuba trips around the world. Also, living in the Pacific Northwest (while going to the University of Washington in Seattle) for the last 5 years really added to my love of water because of all the beautiful lakes and ocean views in that area.
When did you start swimming?
I first took swim lessons in California when I was 1 yr old. We moved from Cali to CO when I was 5, where I joined the Elks summer swim team and swam competitively for 8 years.
Why do you enjoy teaching swim lessons?
I love how happy and giggly all the kids are and I love seeing all the progress that the kiddos can make with my help. Its nice to know that the lessons will not only make the kiddos safer around the water, but also foster their love for the water as they grow into strong swimmers.
So you are a scuba diver! How many dives have you done and where was your favorite place to dive?
I've done 38 dives so far and I am Advanced Open Water Certified. One of my favorite dives so far was the last dive we did in Roatan, Honduras. We swam down to 40 ft where we entered a hole in the reef and swam down through an open top crack that ended out at the edge of a wall at about 80 feet. It was the deepest I had ever been and when you exited the crack, it felt like you were flying because it opened into nothing but blue deep ocean.
Who inspires you?
My brother. He is determined, generous and always pushes me to be better.
Why are you good at what you do?
Because I always work my hardest and try my best at everything I do. I'm very determined, so when there is something that I want, I will do whatever it takes to make it happen.
What else do you love to do?
I love to go hiking with my golden retriever puppy, Charlie, and take him to the dog park (especially ones where he can swim!). I love to be active; currently I play on a co-rec soccer team and I love to climb and run. I also love to be lazy and watch shows and movies on Netflix.
If you could be anything in the world what would you be?
I would be a prosthetist who helps with amputee patients get fitted and complete rehab with cutting edge prostheses. I'm currently applying to several Master's programs for Orthotics & Prosthetics around the country.
