Meet your teacher, Alexis!

By OceanFirst on 7/2/17

Alexis joined us in April and has brought an infectious and enthusiastic spirit to the team. She is passionate about all things water and loves watching her students learn to love the water and succeed in their lessons. We asked her some questions to get to know her better:

Where did your love of the water come from?

My family has always really had a love for the water. I think my love of the water has come from them because I grew up next to a lake where we learned to swim and waterski at a young age. I always loved going on the lake and spending time on the water with my family. Also my love came from scuba diving. I love exploring the ocean and getting to see a part of our world that is unfamiliar and strange.

When did you learn to dive and what are your future scuba diving goals?

I started diving when I was in middle school. My family was involved in diving when I was young but I was super afraid of sharks and just assumed they would eat anything in the water (most likely me if they saw me floating around in a scuba suit). But as I got into middle school I realized that I loved the ocean and wanted to learn to dive so I could see the amazing things the ocean has to offer that can’t be seen from the shore. After that, I got my open water certification at an awesome diver resort in Little Cayman and the rest is history. I have moved up in certifications each time I have gone new places and now I am a certified rescue diver. My future goal is to become a dive instructor so I can teach people how to dive.

Why do you enjoy teaching swim lessons?

My favorite thing about teaching swim lessons is seeing the kids achieve and reach their goals. It makes me so proud to have kids that are passionate about swimming and work hard to reach the goal of getting into the next level.

What other water sports or activities do you enjoy?

I really like waterskiing, scuba diving, tubing, and floating down Colorado creeks.

Who inspires you?

My mom has definitely inspired me most. She is the most hardworking person I know and it amazing to me how much she has achieved. She has always followed her dreams and she has taught me that even though it can be hard you have to fight for what you want in life.

What are you studying in school?

I go to CU Boulder and am studying Geology with a certificate in Hydrology.

What else do you love to do?

I love to hike, read, go to concerts, hang out with friends, and go on any adventure. I am always down to go have fun and do something different. I used to be pretty good at basketball but I haven’t been in the gym awhile.

If you could do anything in the world what would you do?

If I could do anything in the world, I would visit every country and get to experience each like you are a native and not a tourist.

What do you want to achieve in life?

I think what I most want to achieve is to help people around the world get access to clean water. So many people across the globe don’t have access to clean drinking water and once I graduate I want find a way to help with this issue because I believe drinking water is a basic human right and no one should be denied clean water.
