Adaptations We Make to Discover Below the Surface
By Ingrid on 1/18/23
The old adage is that humans should naturally be comfortable in the water because we developed in it in the womb. Most of us are quite far away from that time in our lives and I’m sure none of us remember it anyway. In the womb we did not need to see, swim, breathe or stay warm….we were just safe! So how do we accomplish this feeling of safety in the water without reverting to our “womb state”?

We as humans have the ability to create tools to adapt. Masks create an air barrier that our eyes can focus through enabling us to see in the water, fins let us swim comfortably, our regulator/air delivery system allows us to breathe, and wetsuits/layers keep us warm. Every environment brings challenges, and we can use equipment to adapt to those environments.
