Meet Your Teacher, Boni!

By OceanFirst on 4/23/18

IMG_2089.JPGBoni started teaching for us in fall 2017 and had previously been a swim instructor before moving to Boulder. She has a background in Irish Dance and enjoys seeing young people follow their passions. Boni is dedicated to maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle; she loves nutrition and exercise and enjoys bringing the staff yummy homemade cookies. Teaching kids to swim drives her to share her passion for living a happy and active lifestyle! We asked Boni a few questions to get to know her better:

What was your first experience in the water/water history?

My mom "tossed" me in the water when I was just 6 weeks old! My sister was 3 years old and she did a huge cannonball off the edge as my mom was sitting right their holding me in her arms and I just got completely drenched. I didn't cry or make any fuss, so my mom just decided to get my started right then and there! My mom is also a swim teacher so she taught me to swim all by myself by age 2, and by age 4 she enrolled me in our country club's summer league. By age 6 I was doing club swimming and swam up until my sophomore year of high school. I took a two year break and now I am apart of the CU Triathlon Club and swim about 3 times a week.

What other water activities do you love to do?

I love to surf! When I was younger, every summer my parents put my sister and I in a two-week surf camp in San Diego. We loved it! I don't get to surf all the time, but every time I visit California or any place with a beach, I always try to get back on the surfboard!

Why do you love teaching?

First of all, I love teachings kids to swim because it is a very important skill to learn at a young age! Not only is it a fun activity for them but it's also a safety skill that everyone should learn. I know that if I am having a bad day, I can always come to work knowing that the kids will put a smile on my face! They only see the joy and good in people and I just love that about kids!

What are your passions in life?

I have two HUGE passions in life. Irish dancing (I have been a competitive dancer for 14 years) and living a healthy and balanced lifestyle!

What are you majoring in and what do you want to do with it?

My major is Strategic Planning with emphasis in Media Design and a minor in Technology Arts and Media. I would love to become the social media director for a health and wellness company. I would want to create their social media content and be in charge of their graphic design.

Who is your biggest role model?

Without a doubt, my biggest role model is my mom. She is not only my mom, but also my best friend. She has taught me to be incredibly ambitious and never give up on my dreams! She raised my sister and I to always live a healthy and active lifestyle which is how it has become my passion today. She has completed multiple half Ironmans and two full Ironmans and she is one of the strongest people I know, mentally and physically. Her love for my sister and I is unconditional and her kindness completely blows my mind sometimes. And her sarcasm and weird sense of humor makes me laugh more than anyone I know! I am truly thankful for her and glad she answers my phone calls about 8-10 times a day (haha).

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I have been a competitive Irish dancer for 14 years. I started at the age of 5 and never looked back. I have traveled all over the world for this sport, from the US all the way to Scotland and England. In 2015 I qualified for the World Championships that was located in Glasgow, Scotland. My entire family and I traveled across the sea for me to compete in this international event and it was truly one of the best days of my life. I will never forget that moment and all the hard work and dedication I put into achieving that goal!
